Memorial Service Honors IowansMay 5, 2007 Friends, family members, and Lyme disease advocates gathered near Jewell, Iowa at a private memorial service honoring six Iowans who have died from complications of Lyme disease. A tree was planted in their memory and dedicated with a plaque listing the victim's names. The tree is a symbol of their strength throughout the seasons, their vitality and eternal spirits that will be forever present in our hearts. Ceremony welcome and introduction was given by Judith Weeg, Co-Director of the LDA and Dale Lamb, Co-Chair of the Grinell LDA chapter. Pastor Kerry Jech delivered a meaningful invocation. Vocalist Jennifer Daniel sang "You Raise Me Up" and "Praise You in the Storm". Family and friends announced the names of those who have passed and shared touching stories of hope, faith, and courage about their loved ones. Family members circled the tree and joined hands in prayer. Iowans of all ages with Lyme disease also circled the tree in prayer. In a touching end to the service, patients released white balloons to Heaven while vocalist Daniel sang "I Can Only Imagine." Following the service there was a reception with refreshments at the Memorial Site. Open Eye Pictures of California filmed the service as part of their documentary in progress, "Under Our Skin, the Untold Story of Lyme Disease."
