Advocacy

Getting involved with advocacy is a way for you to make a difference!

We need your help as an advocate for Lyme disease families - our federal and state legislators do listen to us! The more advocates who contact them - the more they will listen.

Lyme disease advocates come from all walks of life and volunteer their time, energy and enthusiasm in working with the Lyme Disease Association to improve quality care and quality of life for people with Lyme disease, their families and caregivers. Advocates also work with us to enhance our visibility in the community and with state and federal legislators.

Lyme disease advocates can improve access to community-based and quality care, provide funding for scientific research, and expand funding for public awareness and programs serving people with Lyme disease.

Join us in speaking up for the needs and rights of people with Lyme disease and their families. Here are a few ways in which you can become engaged and join in the advocacy campaign to fight against this disease.

Educate Yourself

All advocacy begins at home. The first step is to educate yourself, family and friends about Lyme disease. Review this website and contact us to receive a free informational packet that will help you in understanding Lyme disease as well as in raising awareness. Once you have educated yourself about the issues surrounding Lyme disease, you will be more able to advocate for the cause.

Speak Up - Every Voice Counts!

Lyme disease advocates:

  • Stay on top of policy and legislative issues that effect the Lyme disease community
  • Make calls or send e-mails, and write to legislators to forward public policy priorities to improve the quality of life of those affected by Lyme disease
  • Call for advancements in research and enhanced care and support at the federal, state and local levels.

Learn More About Policy

To learn more about how you can help advocate for Lyme related public policy reform, visit the national Lyme Disease Association website: www.lymediseaseassociation.org

Spread the Word

One great contribution you can make is very simple - help raise awareness of Lyme disease and the issues patients face! Patients and family members have a unique insight into life with tick-borne illness and can share their knowledge. Speaking to groups and individuals and writing letters to local and national newspapers are effective ways to tell the story. Visit our Lyme Facts section to find important information about Lyme disease.  Share our brochures and refer individuals to us when you think they might have Lyme disease or be of assistance to the organization.  We can assist you with your awareness efforts by providing you with educational materials to distribute.
